Are Republicans talking about jobs, climate change, the economy, health care, education…etc.?
Nope.
The Republicans are concerned about birth control.
Birth Control.
That’s the most pressing issue to the Republican Party in 2012.
Republicans have created this completely fictional President: his name is Barack X, and he’s an Islamo-socialist revolutionary who’s coming for your guns, raising your taxes, slashing the military, apologizing to other countries, and taking his cues from Europe — or worse yet, Saul Alinsky!
And this is how politics has changed: you used to have to run against an actual candidate. But now, you just recreate him inside the bubble and run against your new fictional candidate. That’s how Bush won in 2004 — by running against John Kerry, a French war criminal.
And speaking of Bush, I know conservatives are saying ‘Oh Bill, come on — Democrats did the same thing to him.’ No. Say what you will about the left’s hating of Bush, (but) at least we were hating on the real guy. We didn’t invent a boogeyman who tanked the economy, took us to war on false pretenses, and tortured prisoners — that was the actual guy.
But run down the list of complaints about ‘Fantasy Obama’. He ‘wants to raise your taxes,’ even though he’s lowered them; ‘confiscate your guns,’ even though he’s never mentioned it; and ‘read terrorists their rights’ — yeah, like he did Tuesday in Somalia.
…You see, the difference is the Republicans’ hatred of Obama is based on a paranoid feeling on what he might do; what he’s thinking; what he secretly wants to change. Anger with Bush was based on what he actually did. What Bush was thinking didn’t matter — because he wasn’t.

Though thoroughly entertaining, this feels more like a “yo momma” slugfest than a substantive debate on national policy.

The music opening this GOP debate feels more like WWE than introducing four people to debate national policy.

This moderate, clear-headed, forward-thinking man has slowly brought this country out of the gutter. While the unemployment rate has a long way to go, his proposals aim at long-term solutions that will avoid a repeat of the economy’s self-immolation in 2008. This State of the Union address outlined few grand proposals, but that comes as little surprise in a presidential election year with a Congress engaged in trench warfare. Over the last three years, no one in Washington has demonstrated more willingness to cooperate and compromise than President Barack Obama.
America needs him for four more years.

Add to that a senate rulebook that allows the Republican minority to filibuster and frustrate every Democratic initiative; a Democratic party as divided and factional as the Republicans are united and disciplined; a Fox News echo chamber that daily demonises the president as a Muslim Marxist foreigner eager to impose totalitarianism on the American republic; and corporate money ready to flood the airwaves and put pressure on the congressmen it funds to ensure its interests are protected. Viewed like this, Obama was only ever a mere mortal taking on an invincible machine – and so was always bound to fail.

So the liberal disappointment with Obama is real. And yet it may not endure forever. Despite everything, the president has amassed quite a record. The healthcare reform he passed had eluded every president since Teddy Roosevelt; it had been a Democratic goal since Truman. But only Obama did it. The stimulus package has created an estimated 2.4m jobs and prevented the recession turning into a second Depression. While other advanced economies are caught in a downward spiral of deficit fetishism, the US is seeing unemployment come down. And recently, Obama successfully fought for and defended the payroll tax cut, one tax cut that benefits low-income Americans.
Abroad, Obama secured what George W Bush only blustered about: the removal of Osama bin Laden. Under Obama, al-Qaida’s capacity and strength have diminished sharply. He made good on his promise to bring troops home from Iraq and is doing the same in Afghanistan (even if he is not so much ending the war there as simply pulling out). Yes, the US played a crucial back-up role in Libya, but there has been no repeat of Bush’s warmongering.
It is not a bad record and there is every chance that it will represent merely the first half of a long game.
